Somalis have come to the western countries with nothing but raw material, their children. With the arrival of industrial revolution, the need of raw material have become a main issue and many of the industrialized countries which were leading that revolution at the beginning started searching for a raw materialby annexing whereverthey supposed there had been raw materialor man power necessary for their industry. Many historians now believe that hunting for raw material was the main reason to the European colonization on some parts of the world. After the collapse of the last Somali Republic, almost what I call three waves of Somali immigrants has ended up somewhere Europe, North America or elsewhere in the world. These three waves of immigrants can be categorized onaccording tothe different periods of their arrival for exempla year 1990-2000, 2000-2010 and the last wave is going onright now in 2017.However, I myself belong to the second wave of Somalia immigrants, year 2000-2010 and still live in Sweden. Like any other Somali immigrant, I was looking for a better future and undoubtedly many of my old dreams have become true at individual level, Alxamdullilah. But the main question which always shows itself is concerned about the national level and that is what is next? We left home, got maybe free education, job opportunities, delivered some financial support to back home, but what is next? You will probably find the answer of this question at the end of the article. On the other hand, when we arrived to those countries, a large number of Somali immigrants did not have something to sell in terms of education or skill instead they did have only a raw material, their own children. As a matter of fact, the only thing we Somalis could sell was our own children and ofcourse we did it, but how?
We did sell our children, but how?
Really, John Watson(American psychologist) knows the answer better than me so that I have a good reason to use Watsons pure words by quoting his famous statement:“Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I’ll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select—doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant-chief and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors”WatsonJohn-Quotations.htm. With the help of Watson, I think, any reader of my article may have understood the central point of my metaphor “selling our children”. As a parent, I think one of the most important things in life is to see my childrenfollowing the footsteps of my roots in terms of religion (what they should to believe in as faith) and traditional culture, how they should live. As Somali family in Diaspora, according to Watson’s point of view, we have already suffered a defeat in the game. Because, if we just study to the families who had had very small children when the immigrated from Somalia to the western world, we may clearly find the consequence of Watson’s theory.None of these families in my point of view can with more assurance say that they have the children they wanted to have in terms of the level of understand of the values of Islamicreligion and Somaliculture. No matter the increasing quantity of mosques, Islamic schools or madras and cultural sites which are continually built in western countries, I think a national project from homeland is essential if we want to save for the rest.
If there is any national project for weary and frustrated Somali families in the Diaspora, I wonder what?
I think, both presidentFarmaajo and his prime ministry Mr. Hassan, who are from Diaspora, have a good knowledge of the subject at hand. They reallycan, without extra explanation, understand the heart of my article. They may also have somehow experienced some of the challenges presented by western cultural values regardingbreeding of children, the role of the two parents for example “who decides what”. I really can’t imagine the contents of your whole national project nor do I know if the weary Somali families in the Diaspora are counted as other Somalis in need.Of courses, they have perhaps no basic physiological need like clothes, food and shelter but they are in need of what I call national psychological care, they need a government who also take care of them no matter where they live.
To explain clearly to my readers what I mean weary and frustrated families in the Diaspora, speaking of Native Americans on their way of vanishing as a nation Alexis Detoquevelli ( a French thinker in 18 century) put it as fallows: The social tie, which distress had long since weakened, is then dissolved; they have no longer a country, and soon they will not be a people; their very families are obliterated; their common name is forgotten; their language perishes; and all traces of their origin disappear“_ch18.htm. On the bases of what Alexis describes in his book, Democracy in America written 1834, I think that Somalis in western countries will meet the same fate if I they don’t get a national psychological support from back home.Having nothing to sell after they have already sold their children Somali parents in western countries are now exhausting and above all frustrated for many years of dealing with new challenges from the new cultures of western countries they arrived; now they also wonder what is next.
